Chapter 8
Five Years Later
Bang sat at the foot of the bed he shared with his wife Ciara feeling depressed and frustrated. It wasn’t even seven and they were again arguing about something that could have been settled if she was just willing to compromise. He was beginning to realize that Ciara being the spitting image of her sister Tamara was not enough to keep him happy. He fooled himself into believing he could learn to love her. That she was his second chance at loving the woman who died too soon. He married Ciara in the visiting room in Petersburg FCI in Virginia. Shortly after he adopted her son, Scottie, because Scottie believed Bang was his father. The poor kid’s real father never came back or inquired about him. Bang was willing to let Scottie believe he was his dad and that made Ciara love him even more. It was also one of the reasons Bang stayed and put up with her shit.
“Have you decided what you’re going to do? Huh?” Ciara questioned, walking out of the master bathroom. “Are you going to continue to embarrass me or quit that damn job?”
“You should be happy your husband even has a job–”
“Don’t give me that bullshit!” she cut him off. “There are millions of men who stay home while their wives hold down careers. Do you even realize how I look to my colleagues and subordinates? They go to lunch at that Burger King and you’re in there making their burgers and fries. I’m an educated, successful woman. The head of a pharmaceutical department. You’re a reflection of me, James! You’re my husband. I can’t even lie about what you do because you’re flipping burgers at the Burger King right down the street from my job!” Ciara was livid as she put on her Red Bottoms to leave for work.
“Ciara, this is an issue you have within yourself. I’m a great husband. I don’t cheat. I’m not out all times of the night and I want to work. So what it’s at Burger King!”
“Ok…let’s make a deal. What will you make? Fourteen or fifteen thousand? I pay for Scottie’s after school care. How about you stay home and be his after school care and I’ll pay you? Doesn’t that sound fair?”
“He’s my fucking son! You don’t have to pay me to do what a father is supposed to do!” Bang jumped up from the bed in anger.
“Shhh. Take a deep breath,” Ciara said, putting a finger to his lips. She walked to the bedroom door. “This conversation is over.”
She was completely emasculating Bang. He never felt any less of a man than when he was with her. He honestly didn’t want to work at that Burger King but it was the last little bit of his manhood he had to hold onto. All Ciara cared about was how it made her look to her coworkers. He asked her to get him a job at her company if it was that much of an issue.
